Would 16x8" ET23 clear the front strut, or does it require a spacer?

It will clear stock strut, but not the brake's carrier if the outer perimeter on the back of your wheel's hub is thick.

I guess to complicate things the wheels are E38 Style 5's on an E30 M3 5-lug swapped car. Any idea?

Okay. If that's anything like my old setup which were the same wheels but redrillled to 4x100 on non-M suspension, it will not clear the brake caliper and a 5mm+ spacer is needed.

What tire are you going to use?

You might want a spacer anyways to look nicer.

Thanks for the info. Tires will preferably a 225/45-16 Direzza Star Spec. I'm hoping to not have to pull the fenders.

You will need a 3mm to 5mm spacer to clear the brakes with E30 M3 5 lug from what I remember.
