    Refinishing my throwing stars myself...

I have been thinking about refinishing my throwing stars myself to save some money. I'd be doing them all silver with Wurth wheel paint like CLangsten did. Since I know the prep work is vital, I have a few questions.

I know I'd be taking the tires off so I don't have to bother with masking and stuff, it makes the job a lot easier. But to prep the paint surface, I either want to do a lot of sanding or media blasting. How much would it cost to, say, have 4 rims sandblasted? What is the best media for blasting a rim? I want to avoid sanding because I sanded my bottlecaps and even after primer and paint, some of the scratches still show up.

The reason I want to paint them is because there is mild curb rash and some scratches on the surfaces. They aren't deep, but they are noticable because of the color difference. So I basically want to smooth all this stuff out and give it a nice fresh coat of paint.

The roundels on the centers caps are brand new and I'd be replacing the tiny ///M button-looking stickers on the rims.

Although not BMW specific, this site had a few good pointers for prepping and painting.

While the black p-shop did look really awesome, I think that painting the centers black would really take away from the style of the wheels.

I hope you leave them silver, TJ.

I wouldn't do it myself, I'd only do that if they were being done professionally.

Well I don't want a completely half ass paint job on them like the bottlecaps. It hard to mask stuff like that.

A very helpful article indeed. I'm planning on refinishing my basketweaves myself. My plan is to fill the gouges with JB Weld, then sanding it all down and them finishing them with Würth paint and new roundels.

TJ, even though it was done all yourself, I think that the bottlecaps did turn out good for a do it yourself mod. And like it was said, if you don't like the quality of the results, you can always wait up until the job can be done professionally.
