    What to use?

    Hey all,

I'm trying to strip off a powder coat layer and clear coat from some style 5's. I want to get down to the bare aluminum in order to re-powder coat. Aircraft stripper is working ... s l o w l y ... I was wondering if there was something better? Or, is there a metal finishing shop in the SF Bay Area that has a vat of some toxic shit that they wouldn't charge too much to dip these rims in?

    Thanks,
    Sean

i've found bmw's powdercoat is too tough for chemicals, it needs to be media blasted. it shouldnt cost much to get them done. the clear coat will come off the lips with aircraft stripper and some thorough scrubbing, though. the zinc finish on the bolts will come off if you soak them in vinegar, then they will need to be re-plated.

This is that nasty stuff. Wear gloves and maybe a gas mask Seriously though, don't get it on your hands/skin. Water neutralizes it but get it on your hands and you've got about 3 seconds to wash it off before it BURNS...

Yeah, that's the stripper I used. One wheel had a super thick coating on it. It took that and a bead blaster to clean down to the bare aluminum. Oh yeah, and ALL DAMN DAY for one wheel too!

The other wheels look to be the OE coating, but I'm not having much luck with getting the clear or the color to peel off of them. They just turn opaque white when the aircraft stripper is put on them. Should I just continue to layer that stuff on, or should I powder coat over the now "roughed up" surface?

Obviously, I'm new to the powder coating scene. Any tips from those of you who have done it?

you have to have the bare metal for powder coat, so get them media blasted.
only other choice is spray paint over the oem paint/primer that remains.
