Stick with the basics. A 15x8 +20 can fit a 225/45 no problem and that is basically the biggest size you're going run on any rival/nt01/rs3/starspec/r888/etc.
Now with the setup stated you can also run any take-off spec e30/miata tire for cheap as stated by a user above. For example, I can currently get a complete set of Toyo RRs with ~70% tread remaining for around $100.
With an 8 inch +20 you can run both 225 and 205 without worrying about stretching tires and spacers and all that.
Your biggest limiting factor isn't whether an 8 inch is more competitive than a 9 inch or vice versa, it is how much seat time you actually have.
