    Paint removal on old wheels?

I purchased a set of wheels a year ago., hadn't bothered with them until recently.
So I tried to give the refurbishing a go on my own but, I'm now stuck with what looks to be 3-4 coats of paint, and the final coat being a ceramic, porous type of primer, that just won't give up easily.
I had another friend with some time and skills, attempt to remove the paint and said, he tried aircraft stripper in a can and it only removed 1 coat of paint. Next, he tried varnish/paint remover and still ended up with poor results, only to give the wheels a dull look.
The wheels look like this at the moment and, I'm afraid of using something that is just going to ruin the aluminium underneath. So I'm wondering what any of you have used to get difficult finishes off wheels?

Thank you in advance for your help.

i once made the mistake of getting a set of wheels sandblasted. the pitting was horrendous. maybe glass beading or walnut shelling would be ok.

Where gloves and a mask when using it will seriously burn your air passages ask me how i know. Make sure gloves ARE NOT nitrile based or it will react with the nitrile and burn you hands. Again ask me how i know. Its nasty shit but the best.

Fyi ive used this on my OZ turbos and countless other painted parts. Does no harm to aluminum.

No problem! Even though you said he used it already its the best shit out there. I've had stuff not give up easily and it just needs to be done layer by layer it sucks but only way unless you wanna sit there and sand it all off

Kind of a stupid question but, can this be purchased at the local home Depot or do I have to buy online?

I wore several layers of gloves too. Even after a little while the latex ones start to burn.

Ended up using the gel version, to prevent the wind blowing back at me.

Thank for the tips guys, I went ahead and used some heavy duty, thick rubber gloves I had from work. Only complaint is, I used a paint brush and some small dots would hit my skin and freaking burn.

I was expecting better results but this will do for now, as I'm gonna have the lips professionally polished. :D

What i would do is take the gel version and apply it with paint brush and then let it sit the 10 or 20 min it needs. After that i would take a plastic razor blade and scrape the shit off.

That was the exact procedure I did, like I stated in the original post, 3-4 coats of crappy paint take a toll over the years.
It's all good though, with your guy's help I was able to remove a huge amount of gunked up crap.

I've found that this stuff works a lot better than other aircraft stripper.
