That logo is not an official BMW one AFAIK. Here is a link to a modest compendium of BMW motorcycle emblems compiled by an enthusiast.
I have been really into vintage motorcycles going on 14 years now and I have only seen that emblem in motorcycle shops or on motorcycles. It was apparently originally produced by San Jose BMW in the seventies to celebrate the racing success of the R90S. San Jose BMW still sells them, and, after your urging to "do some research bro", I called them 5 minutes ago, and indeed they have them made for them by an after-market manufacturer and have for quite some time. The only other online dealers of this emblem I have found are all motorcycle dealerships and use the same product description as San Jose BMW. I then utilized my rudimentary German skills and searched for BMW germany sites using terms such as "BMW schild Geschichte" , "BMW logo Geschichte", "motorrad", "motorfahrrad", "BMW rennsport geschichte" and combinations and permutations of these and found no record of this particular logo, including official BMW sites.
So to answer your question, right are wrong, no, I am not joking.Comment

Its so unofficial it appeared on the M1 - the ORIGINAL M car. :ohsnap:That logo is not an official BMW one AFAIK. Here is a link to a modest compendium of BMW motorcycle emblems compiled by an enthusiast.

I am completely willing to accept that I might be wrong and I don't doubt that you have seen it on an M1. Perhaps you can provide a link to a picture, as the BMW presskit and any procar, leman, artcar, or IMSA M1 images or in person I have seen did not have it on there. That doesn't mean that someone didn't stick one on there, but when the BMW parts guy tells me that it is not a BMW factory part, I tend to believe him.
I am not interested in pissing contests, but comments such as "you are wrong" or blanket statements without any semblance of proof are unhelpful and don't contitute an argument. I am interested in educating myself and others if possible. One photo or scan or something would end this discussion. I have nothing emotionally invested in whether this rondel is official BMW or not, but at least I explain my reasoning when someone questions the truthiness of my statements and my replies are intellectually honest. If you or YAN-3 had supplied a link to a picture or link instead of just making a statement in a flaming tone, then I'm wrong. end of story, first beers on me.Comment

dude i didnt mean to sound like i was jumping on your case, its just that i wouldnt type something that i didnt know. check out early BMWs such as some e21s, 3.0CSLs and yes even some M1. i recently purchased a set of old vintage hub covers off of a older 3.0 with the logos on them. although they are faded and dull, ill try to find some photos for you.
bad one but its for starters, look closely to the center
