looking to upgrade my tires, i would like to keep the 14inch wheels i have, what is the widest 14 tire i can run? 225?

225 is about the limit on a standard-issue e30 rim. You looking at street rubber or R compounds?

I put 205/60/14 Falkens on a set of weaves, which are 6.5" wide. They fit nicely and don't have any sidewall bulge. On a 6" bottlecap I wouldn't go any wider.

Aggressive summer tire: 195/60/14 Falken RT-615
Good daily performance tire: 205/60/14 Falken ZE-912
Don't be fooled by the width, the RT-615 will be a lot more capable than any other 14" street tire.
