From what I've read, these cars are starting to generate a premium. What could I expect to pay for one in good condition (no rust) in the states?

A few years ago, people were paying 10-15k from my limited research. This has been one of my dream cars since I read a Roundel article about the "Black Barts" (grey market cars with black interior) and I would love to own one someday.

What are my chances if I'm not willing to shell out 30k?

30k? Your chances are still very good. They are still out there and people anticipate them increasing but just because owners are trying to make it the next e30 m3, doesn't mean it will be. 4 dr sedan, black/beige, detuned engine and us bumpers doomed it for me. Plus it looks the same as a 535iS.

For average mileage driver-quality US-spec e28 M5, that's still the same price range. Prices haven't really moved much in the last 8-10 years.

But low-mileage examples, and true Euro gray market M5s have increased significantly in the last few years. The mye28.com link John posted has lots of good anecdotal info...
