535 e34 are nice cars and the m30 is a great motor if you keep up on maintenance and it's been maintained by PO's. if you can't do basic maintenance and a little more, having the car serviced (properly) by a euro/BMW shop will be a little pricier. If you can shop online and do the work yourself you will be golden!

    Good luck!

I have 95 4runner, if its a 3.0 then I feel sorry for ya! Go for the e34, I have an e28 as well and think about selling it to buy a touring all the time. M30 is the way to go, gotta love a fat torque curve. If you are even slightly mechanically inclined and have a desire to learn about the car then you'll be fine doing maintenance and making small repairs and modifications.

Don't be misled by the false rap BMW gets for having expensive parts or being difficult to work on. Simply not true in my opinion...the older cars that is. A manual transmission would be nice though!
