what are you running? will you need the bell housing sensors for crank and reference? If so can not be from a e34.

M30 from 89 is motronic 1.3 and yes doesnt need bellhousing sensors. Getrag 260/6 were the standard transmissions that came in e34 manual cars. It might be an easier and cheaper tranny to score that also works for you.

any m30 trans should bolt up though correct?
I'll just have to modify the plate-style shifter if its an early model and plug up those holes?

Yes any M30 or S14/S38 trans will bolt up. Not sure if the 325e shifter will work. I can tell you that a 325i shifter will work with the G260/6 but not with a G265(selector rod is longer and how shifting arm mounts to tranny is different).
