    89 535I No Start

Hey guys i'm looking for a little help. I have a 1989 535i. Have had the car for years. Blew a head gasket awhile back. Let it sit for awhile and finally replaced it. Once i replaced it the fuel pump also went out, I replaced it. So once that was done the car would turn over but not start. I had it run off of starting fluid once but this was when I was determining if the fuel pump was any good. It ran for a sec then shut off. So i know my timing was set right and the cps was also good. Well it wont start at all now. Turns over fine. I am getting power at the coil and spark. It is very strong. I am also getting fuel. I can even smell it cycling through the exhaust. Also has new plugs wires cap and rotor. I have even gone to the extent of swapping out the ecu. Did nothing. So im looking for suggestions. All of my fuses and relays are good. I would love to have the car back on the road and need some help. The car is currently at a family members house 4 hours away from me and I plan on making a trip there and finally get it going again, and help or ideas on what it could be would be appreciated greatly. Thanks

Your Fuel filter is in need of replacement its underneath the back of the car on the right side they get clogged up easy and doesn't allow fuel to get threw.

I was also thinking fuel filter. Be sure to depressurize the fuel system before you take the hoses off. Also you might want to wear some goggles or something, as the fuel will come rushing out as soon as you un-hook them.

Beyond that i would say check your distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires, but you said you have spark so I'm not sure.

Have you tried changing out the crank position sensor? Thats what my experience has been when I've had the same problem whether it was my e34 or e30.

So you have spark when you pull a plug and ground it still connected to the spark plug wire? If so then spark can be eliminated.

Kinda confused on your fuel description. What I would do is confirm the pump runs and primes. Listen for it, pull the harness and voltage drop with koeo across the pump harness. Should be 12v. If not then check a wiring diagram.

If the pump does work I would check fuel pressure. You could have fuel going to the rail but you need (I think) 38-43 psi. If lower you could not pour enough to get the engine to displace enough fluid to run. Remove the fuel line to the rail (its closest to the firewall) and hook a fuel pressure gauge.

If it reads correctly, it would be safe to say pump, filter, fuel lines are all in good order. I would say for the hell of it try a fuel injector test. There is one that you run a gauge connected to the fpr side and you energize one injector, and the gauge reads if the injector is leaking or clogged. A leaky injector could spray and leak excess fluid, which would have a lower psi rating. A clogged will not spray and thus have a higher fuel psi rating.

You can also use a diode connected to the harness side of the injector and if the CPU does fire the injectors it will light up.

If fuel seems to be at the rail at correct pressure and such, you need to run a compression test. Make sure it's in specs.

Best of luck feel free to pm me with any questions
