Drivers window knocking

Just picked up a 90 4dr 535i. The drivers window will go down only about an inch and then starts to knock very loud. The PO told me it was the regulator just wanted to confirm before I start ordering things.

Im curious to know too, my window when going up experiences trouble about 2 inches from the top.

I'm pretty sure the knocking is stripped gears in the reg.

Ok thanks guys! Just ordered a new regulator. I noticed there are clips that you can buy for the regulator should I order them just to be safe in case I break a clip taking off the old regulator?
