    E34 525i brake upgrade

Who here has done the 540i caliper/rotor upgrade?

Price on the rotors between 525i/540i is almost the same, so I am thinking about just upgrading them when I need to do a brake job.

540i has 302x28mm front vented rotors vs. Vented 300x21mm
540i has 300x20mm rear vented rotors vs. Solid 300x10mm

-What calipers and carriers did you use front/rear? (e32 stuff works?)
-Any issues with upgrading rear rotors to vented?
-What rear brake shoes did you use?

    Thanks!

I never felt the need to unless I somehow found a set of Euro M5 brakes.

If you haven't seen this before, here is a list of common setups and part numbers

I'll be swapping the set from my e28 to the new-to-me e34 525i this week. All parts are from an e34 540i. I can't see there being any difficulties with fitment, especially since everything went onto the 528e flawlessly. Will keep you posted Jean!

The only part that concerns me now thinking about it will be the ebrake shoes. Used the stock ones on the e28 and the brake set and held well. However after sitting overnight, there would be a slight groan in reverse.

540 or V-8 E32 parts will work. You'll need the (wider)calipers and matching brackets for them.
Friction materials remain same. NO difference in swept area/ ultimate braking power but additional resistance to fading from the better vented rotors is beneficial for repeated braking.
I have most of the parts used and cheap(no brackets), find me at BFC, same user name if interested.
