Hey guys. The auto trans on my e34 stays in 2nd gear for a bit too long, otherwise trans shifts smooth and normally. It'll rev up to 3k or 4k at its worse and then shift. I know trans fluid sometimes goes neglected in these cars as its a dipstickless transmission and a bit tedious to change out the fluid, no record of it being changed based off of the receipts of the car. What do you guys think?

So Ill have it in "e" mode DRIVE and it will shift from 1st to 2nd fine...
but when it tries to get 3rd gear, it has trouble. It is hard to describe but I think of it like a synchro on a manual transmission's gear.
regardless - just go get it on jacks and check the fluid level, and drive the piss out of itComment

Hah!
You didn't mention straight 6 or v8, if its a 6 you have the A4S310R GM France transmission, V8 had the ZF 5 speed.
Truthfully the fluid is probably ancient and has rarely been changed, common on these fairly bulletproof transmission.
What you are describing is either a valve body sticking, simply dirty fluid so the transmission is not shifting as efficiently, or simply worn out parts.
As both transmissions are electronically controlled the TCU will tell the solenoids which gear to select, holding onto a gear longer is usually the result of worn out fluid or a sticky valve as I said above.
Toss the car up in the air, and remove the FILL plug on the transmission, some fluid may come out (or POUR out if the transmission is overfilled) How does it look? Is it red? dark red? brown? If its dark red, usually a fluid change is okay as the ATF is just old, if its brown, leave it the heck alone and either 5/6 speed swap or find another transmission.. Flushing a transmission with shit fluid will usually make it worse as most of the friction material on the clutches is now in the fluid itself.
Make sure it smells sweet, if its burnt you know something inside is eating itself.
Note 90% of failed GM A4S310/270R's that I've seen are due to never changing the fluid or a faulty speed sensor on top.Comment
