    New E34 buyer

Hello all. Was looking for the proper place to post an introduction, but I couldn't find one. Glad to be a part of the r3vlimited community. Have been a lurker for some time, and spent a lot of time in the technical section when a friend of mine wrecked his e30. Spent more time then I'd like to admit working on getting that car straight again, and got very well antiquated with the chassis. This being said however, I have little to no knowledge about the e34 chassis (other than I got offered a trade for a sweet 5-speed, V8, 530i a while back for my old 6th gen Honda Accord, and I turned it down like an idiot.) So my reason for making this post is that I am currently trying to find a nice older body style BMW for my girlfriend, and it has been proving to be very difficult for me. (She is picky...)

Long story short, I've found a quite nice condition '95 525i in white with a 5-speed for sale locally. I went to look at it with her a few days ago and she loves it, but I have a couple concerns about it. I didn't get to do most of the checks I wanted to do to it due to lack of time, and the fact that it started pouring rain when we went to look at it, but I did get to start it and visually scope it out while I was there. The issue that concerns me is that although it starts up just fine with no issues, it shakes a bit at idle. It is nothing major, but I know it is more then normal. I just need to know if there is anything special I should check for when I go back to do a more thorough inspection and actually test drive the car. It has a very clean Carfax, no check lights, very clean interior, has working A/C and heat, doesn't make any funny noises, gear selector seems smooth, Etc Etc.

I plan to do a full test drive, compression test, and better inspection of the undercarriage and suspension when I go back, but I wanted to check and see if there was anything I should look for in particular before I go back as you guys would certainly know more then I do. I know from some research that I have done that these 5 series cars are generally very reliable, especially the 535i, and that the 525i is quite a find in such good condition with a 5-speed gearbox. I also know that the price they are asking is fairly good. I will post a link below so you all can see it. Also if anyone is selling a nice e30/e34/e36 possibly an e39 in the Houston area, feel free to let me know in case this car ends up not being bought by us. :)

Here is a link to the car she wants: http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...48272514&Log=0

As far as the engine goes, does it shake only when cold? Does the idle go up and down or does it stay steady? There's a lot of variables there. Check motor mounts, valves, injectors, throttle body, etc...

Thanks that's all good to know to look out for. It stays at a steady idle, it just seems pretty low and shaky. I am going to go for a second look at it today, and I will check the motor mounts and listen for valve tick. Again, it might have just been some bad gas, because they said it had been sitting for a while and not gotten much interest, and the tank was pretty much dead empty when I started it. Who knows. I'll do a lot more inspection then I could last time today.

Went and checked it out today. The shake the car has is due to a misfire. Nothing too serious, still gets up and goes without hesitation, but there are a couple things still worrying me about the car. All the ads say the A/C is fine, but I couldn't get it to blow cold. The blinkers and all other lights work, but the hazard lights don't go on with the switch. And to top it all off, I still couldn't get a compression test done because I brought a spark plug socket that was too big and had no means of taking out the plugs.

Question for today is, aside from coil packs, injectors, and spark plugs, what else could be causing the misfire? I Found through some research that the coil packs are what is generally prone to be the cause on these 525i's, but all 6 packs looked almost new upon removal of the cover. I won't rule it out as a possibility, but I am pretty sure it isn't the coil packs. Just trying to get as much info as I can before a return trip because it is quite the drive for me to go look at this car, and my RX7 isn't very friendly on gas.
