e34 530i oil in valve covers

Is it normal to have oil floating around in the valve covers under the coils? I have maybe half a cup in each valve cover.
    Maybe the valve cover seals?

Im sorry if this is ignorant. Im really new to the m60 engines and Im not sure if the valve cover is oen to the rest of the head in some way that I am not aware of. I have never taken it apart so I dont know.
If anyone could help me out that would be great.
I just put the m60b40 air intake parts (intake manifold, TB, MAF,) on my m60b30 and I am having a few issues, but the sound is great.
I think I pulled on the cable that connects to throttle body-traction control unit to hard and now the traction control light is on. I also have a check engine light on, which may or may not be related. The engine runs fine though.
