How to tell an M60b30 from a b40

Guy came up to me and complimented my car, told me he had an e34 in the past. Said he bought a replacement engine from a junkyard for it. Said it was the 4 liter and he’d let me have it for cheap as he got rid of his 5 series and it’s just been sitting ever since. How can I tell the difference between the two? If it’s like the m20 in any way I’m sure there are very subtle differences. What should I look for?

Probably easiest just to check the engine block stamp, which is with the engine number on the block - you decipher it as follows (from the Turner site).... presumably the code will either start in 30 if it's a 3.0 or 40 if it's a 4.0.

    My e30: OEM+ with M30B35

also (but not as definitive as block stamping, since it can be swapped) is to look at the intake. the 4.0 has a 3.5" MAF and bigger runners on the intake manifold. the 3.0 has a 3" maf and skinnier runners.
