    M20b20 from e34 swap to e30

    Hi, im new to the group, i drive an e36 318is but my friend has an 316i coupe e30 and he bought a m20b20 engine from e34 and he is trying to do a swap to his 316i, he got everything that he needs but the only thing that fits in a car is engine, we fired up the engine and it works perfect, so my question is what are his best options for driveshaft, transmision, exhaust and diff

    There are lots of options, actually- the M20 has the same bellhousing as the M4x, M5x series engines, so you can use any 5 speed from almost any later six or even DOHC 4 cylinder.

    There are lots of caveats, of course.

    Around here, the G260, the 'right' 5- speed is getting hard to find. So wherever it is that you're at, start shopping and see what you can find.

    The later transmissions need a custom shift platform (cut and weld, is all) if you're picky
    about where the lever ends up and so forth.

    The differential depends on the transmission- if you use a later 5- speed, then you're looking for a lower ratio
    (2.93- 3.23) version, as 5th gear is 1:1. If you use the M20 5 speed, the 3.64 in there works ok.
    If you get lucky and find an E46 6- speed, then you can go as high as a 4.11 or even 4.27 or 4.44 for lots of quick shifting.

    THEN you get to sort out the driveshaft.

    I tend to worry about that last, and budget $500, so that if I need to have one made, it's not a shocker.

      The G260, the 'correct' 5-speed, is becoming increasingly difficult to come by around here. So, wherever you are, go shopping and see what you can come up with. super mario bros

      If you're finicky about where the lever ends up and other details, you'll need a bespoke shift platform (just cut and weld).
