    Alternator Pivot Bolt

I have been lurking here for a while as I undergo a piecewise restoration of my new, to me, 1989 325i. This website has been invaluable and for that I thank you all very much.

I was swapping my old alternator, original w/ 225,000+, today and I either lost the nut that was on the back of the pivot bolt or it was never there (couldn't find on the ground or in any underbody trays). I am kind of confused because if there was a nut, then it was being held captive by the alternator bracket which holds it to the engine. I never could have got a wrench on the nut it in the first place. Ultimately, I only needed to use my 13mm ratchet on the pivot bolt head to remove it.

Was there a nut on the back of the alternator pivot bolt?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Yes.

Its trapped in there by the casting around it. (You don't need to put a wrench on it to keep it from spinning.)

Thanks for the reality check. Off to the dealer to buy a new one, just could not find it on the ground.
