Urethane may actually be better if you can find good quality stuff. Rubber has a tendency to degrade unless the formula is perfect, especially when it is exposed to the elements. Either way, I'm very interested to see how this turns out.Comment

Yea, urethane seems to be an all around better choice. It drops the price significantly over rubber - not to say these will be super cheap. My aim is to have them around the $300 range. This is a rough estimate as of now - please keep that in mind.
As of my calculations now, they are still a bit too expensive to produce and sell at that price. Cost reductions will come in the form of me designing them in a way to use less material and if I can get the supplier to agree on a deal for a mass purchase.
I figure you're getting a lot more for your money over comparable reproductions in fiberglass for around that same price - but I would not like to exceed that $300 selling point, if at all possible.

I was just looking into other materials the supplier offers and foam is one of them. It costs about the same as urethane plastic - and although it is a lighter material, I think the urethane plastic will be more durable. Plus it's a more familiar material.Comment

By my post-it calculations the mtec spoilers are around 428 cu.in.
L x W x H = volume, / 3 (rough estimate of amount of area the spoiler takes up within that dimension) = spoiler volume.
Did the same calculation for the insert.
I haven't calculated any production/labor costs yet.
However, on top of urethane material cost for each spoiler, will be hardware and shipping costs (materials -> me, and spoilers -> you)
The materials for the mold are also additional costs - which I may just eat to keep selling costs down.
Again, the actual cost of materials per unit won't be known until the first cast is poured. Calculating the spoiler only takes up 1/3 of that area may be generous.Last edited by Moto-Mucci; 04-29-2009, 11:26 AM.Comment

I stated that I would make this trade in the first post. If you are willing, then I would gladly accept.
I would prefer that the Mtec is in good, clean condition overall. Any imperfections will show up in reproductions. I can take care of minimal ones.

Eurostop only sells the CF inserts separate, not the FG ones.It may be worthwhile to just produce the rubber portion. Eurostop does make an insert that seems to be pretty OK and at a decent price, and they offer it in CF as well as plastic or fiberglass (not sure which one).
I hadn't begun to consider the labor and shipping costs... ouch.Comment

Based on the specs you provided (428 cu.in.), and assuming it will be one piece of urethane plastic, utilizing urethane rubber molds:
$80-100/plug (the spoiler)
$200-400/mold
$13 bottle of pigment
$40 gallon of release agent
$50 miscellaneous brushes, buckets, etc.
Let's say you can get 20-30 plugs out of the aforementioned materials.
That's $10-15 per plug. So the total cost of a unit would be $90-115.
Please note, I have absolutely no experience whatsoever in this field, and all this info came from ~20 minutes of searching on the web.Comment
