you let me know where I can get 428cu.in. of Urethane molding material for $10 and I'll gladly produce these for $100.
Otherwise lets not post up numbers when you have no idea what you're talking about.
I won't rob you guys if you promise not to expect to rob me.Comment

Materials are what will mainly drive the cost. I'm constantly doing research to make sure I can produce these as cost effective as possible while still coming out with a quality part in the end.
When that first spoiler comes out of the mold, I'll know how much it will cost and what it will look like. I'll post up pictures and prices and you guys can tell me whether you want me to make more or not.
Just don't expect to pay $150 for these considering that won't even cover the materials.Comment

clearly you misunderstand me. The molding material would be $200-400. Unless I am terribly mistaken, you can use molds multiple times. So if you get 20 units out of a $200 mold, you are spending $10 on the mold for each unit you produce.
Edit: plus, the molding material is not 428 cu.in. I took the original dimensions of 428 and multiplied it by 3 to get the approximate dimensions of the mold. so its appx. 856cu.in.
Just because I have no experience with this stuff doesnt mean I'm clueless.Comment

Sorry, I keep saying molding material when I mean casting material. My rough volume calculations of the spoiler / casting material was 428 cu.in.clearly you misunderstand me. Since there will be 2 molds for the spoiler body and insert the molding materials listed will obviously be much more then 428 cu.in.
The Molding material volume should be around 2,260 cu.in. for just the spoiler body - and that's with a pretty tight fitting enclosure (about an inch on all sides.)
Mold box: (56 x 8 x 6) - 428 = 2260 cu.in.Comment

Oh, sorry. I must have missed where you said that the 428cu.in. was only for one of the two pieces.
So each of the two pieces are 428cu.in., and the total dimensions of the spoiler(both pieces) is 55 x 7 x 5 in. ? Am I reading this right? I'm a bit confused.Comment

Im not raining on your parade, i think this is an excellent idea, but i for one wouldnt fork that out.
Also someting that crossed my mind: The E30 crowd seems to be kinda a DIY crowd, so 150$ for the e28 spoiler that takes some work will most likely outsell a nice 300$ unit.
Again, im not raining on your parade, i've always wanted someone to step up to the plate and do this; as i know this isn't really a business venture
But if you get it down, and start making molds of some really sexy and even rarer stuff, 300$ doesnt seem so bad anymore

That 428 cu.in. is an estimate of the spoiler base. The insert has a much lower volume obviously.
The spoiler dimensions, put together, are: 53.5 x 6 x 4
The spoiler base mold box has to be at least 56 x 8 x 6. That's a tight fit still, so maybe larger.
Then there will be another mold box for the insert.
I wouldn't doubt some wont be willing to throw down the cash, but these will probably be limited production anyways.Im not raining on your parade, i think this is an excellent idea, but i for one wouldnt fork that out.

I'm only planning on casting around 5-10 of them. If there's actually a higher demand maybe I'll cast as many as I can get out of the mold but I'm not counting on more then 10 people actually following through to purchase. I'd like to keep these limited production.
I'm starting with reproductions of an existing item, with minor tweaks. Post success of this batch will most likely spark some future, limited production, custom designs (I'm a product designer by day so I can't help myself.) So the custom and rare items will come later. ...but I'm getting ahead of myself.Comment
