The only way to tell for sure if the relay is bad is to take it apart and see if the thin wire that acts like a fuse is melted. This of course is not that easy as you must be really careful when taking the cover off. I have seen other people repair the relay by putting in another wire to bridge the gap, but then that defeats the whole purpose of the fuse. I would just get a new one as that is most likely your problem. This is usually caused by connecting the jumper cables backwards to a dead battery. A lot of people see the brown wire and mistake it for faded red or posative. These cars are negative ground.

ok i'll pick up one of those manuals, i'll check out that relay too... how can i tell if its bad or not??
buy the Bentley, it's the bible for the E30/E24/E28 all things BMW pretty much...
don't buy the Haynes Manual unless you're in the UK...,
when was the timing belt replaced?
If you don't know or if the previous owner can't show you a receipt, be prepared to do that ASAP...
