    E30 on car talk

I am listening to the May 9th car talk podcast, and a 17 year old calls in and says, "my parents don't want me to buy a car, but i have a job now and really want an E30!"

tom and ray seem to think that he will be constantly fixing the thing and pouring money into it repairing stuff, but still think he should buy it.. and buy 2! (one for parts)

The guy's name was Stephen and he is from st. paul, MN... is he on here maybe? Anyone else hear this?

I heard it. What dickheads, they're only a few miles away maybe I will go and teach them that e30's are incredibly reliable and well worth the trouble. I'd drive over there right now, trouble is, none of mine run :)

haha, yeah i was a bit upset when they were saying it was so unreliable, but they did note that if you are doing the work yourself it wouldn't be too bad. i feel like emailing them about how the E30 is God's chariot, but I am not sure they would understand.

Considering that mine continues to start perfectly every morning with a bad exhaust, loose alternator, oil leak, and bad CSB, I'd say they're definitely more reliable than the Car Talk guys say.

The E30 is like many other European cars. You must adopt a proactive maintenance schedule, rather than a reactive one. E.g. do not wait until the timing belt snaps to do the timing belt and water pump. It's a concept that is difficult to understand as a teenager.

If you want to wrap your mind around what my brother and I term a "teenager maintenance schedule" it is to buy an E36, throw on some DDEs, clears, and Eibach Pro-Kit springs, then ask the forums what the next mod should be. Oil change or NGK BKR6EQUP plugs. A new water pump doesn't even factor into the equation.

No different from the majority of today's general population.

yep. and if it's an E30, replace that with depo smileys, sportmaxx 15x8 et0 wheels and a volvo lip. Then ask what lowering springs to get and how much HP from an ebay chip. Whats a timing belt?

^ word. But it can depend on the backround of the peron i guess. I bought my e30 as a (late) highschool car and timing belt water pump plugs oil etc were all the first things to do. Then for the next year, just keeping on top of maintenance. then i joined r3v, and started doing mods once the car was in good order.

Then agian, im probably in the minority there...

Where can I download the May 9th show? I can only find the current one on Itunes.

Edit: I retract my question because I am a fucking retard.
