DIY Momo Hub adapter via 91 airbag wheel?

I have heard of this being done, searched and found nothing. I just bought a small-diameter CHEAP ebay wheel and now need to mount it. Rather than spend the $70 for a proper momo adapter i was thinking of making my own improper DIY one by cutting down the stock worthless airbag wheel and mounting the new ebay wheel to the stock hub.

it seems simple enough to try and was just wondering if anyone had any specific advice or experience to share. peanut-gallery comments welcome also, as per usual.

You can try, I've never heard of it and it doesn't sound safe.

I did it back in the day. I am a great welder and made a great hub adapter out of the stock stearing wheel. Which in turned saved me some cash. Now I just buy the right parts for the project. But yet it can be done.

For seventy bucks this seems like a good deal.

            NOT!

It depends on how good your welding skills are and whether are not you are willing to trust your life with them.

100-150 (depending if it is on sale or not) for a super cheap, junk, mig welder at Harbor or seventy bucks for a hub that fits correctly. The machine they use to make the hubs at Momo are a lot more precise than your welder I' betting.

air bagged steering wheels already have momo bolt pattern on it's hub, and steering wheel itself is pinned in. All you have to do is drill and tap those 6 holes.

I guess I'll do a DIY sometime this week, will have to find my GF's airbagged wheel.

i am also a kick-ass welder, if i do say so myself. just seem to have the knack for it. anyway, what exactly did you do? what wheel did you start out with?

                free and a little DIY > $70

                maybe.

                anyway thought id ask...

wow, good to know assuming the area around those holes is strong enough... :)

It was the stock 325 non air bag wheel. Cut all the foam and what not off then went at it with a cut off wheel to get off the stuff I didnt need. Had a peice of 1/8th inch steel in the shop that I torched and ground down the the diamiter I wanted. Then I marked out the wholes on my steering wheel, drilled them out. Clamped and tacked it on for the test fit. Made sure everything was perfect then I welded it all. Wish I still had the car I would pull it off and take some pictures. The steering wheel was still removable with the 6 bolts and the hub was also removable. I have 100% faith in my welding skills as I weld just about everyday.

Someone, don't remember who, had made brake carrier brackets out of marine grade plywood and was talking about doing some R&D for marine grade plywood steering wheel adapters in the near future. Maybe they will chime in on how that is coming along...
