Holy cow - just switched to mozilla foxfire - SO MUCH BETTER
Very nice. Of course, any linux box could do that, thats why Linux kicks ass.
I had mine up for right around 200 days, when I had to throw a tape drive in it.

Hah, I just dont like messing around for 500000 hours to get Slackware setup to COMPILE things.
I have tried them all. The best?Very basic Mandrake <snip>
When I am setting up my linux servers for clients, I cant sit around all day and mess with a problem (well, I can, but why) on install, and when no other distro would install without be having to sit there and babysit the damn thing (read: slackware).
I too tried slackware, it's a good way to make yourself realize how much you don't know. I bough RH 5.2 and a book, and it got me started, but back then the hardware support was pretty bad.
Now when I am setting up a server, I just boot Knoppix and call debootstrap as root, apt-get install install sshd, adduser for myself, and go home. I do all the rest over the net. Reboot it the next day, throw on the data, set up printers, etc. and it's all good. Recently I've been trying to figure out a good way to admin the windows machines without opening gaping holes in the firewall: I just ssh -C into my linux fileserver, and forward VNC to my local machine. That + Samba pretty much does it. I love not feeling 0wned by Bill Gates.

You almost want to put off upgrades just to get that number up.... I took a screenshot of that uptime a few days ago, just to email to the boss to prove that I really am doing my job. :)
do you VNC the windows comp, or VNC the server?
I do a similar thing, but I l do it the puss way (graphical installation). I just have it install sshd and a few other thing it needs.
The new samba is really improved. When I started my first server, I was running Mandrake 7.1 (kernel 2.2) on X-Term (P II 350). Of course, back then, I was only 15, Linux blew ass for beginners, so I messed with it for about a month, then loaded Win2000.
Now I am actually doing this for money, I had to get halfway decent :)
As for the uptime, how long do you think I sat there contemplating it? LOL
Of course, I told myself that no one gives a shit, so no one is gonna ask for my uptime :D

#1: Gentoo owns
#2: Firefox owns
#3: If you're on winxp, download SP2 and use the IE plug-in tool to DISABLE the popup-making crap that attaches to IE
I use IE on windows, firefox on linux (gentoo).
I still use IE on windows because it is faster. I'm a hotkey junky and I expect things to happen as soon as a push a key - not a second later, or even a splitsecond later.

meh.. IE with sp2 keeps me happy.. i don't care if i don't have transparent png support.
load times are what usually bugged me with firefox.. i know my way around IE too well to bother with another browser, i tried crazy browser, firefox, netscape.. i just keep returning to IE.

But just a quick download of fox fire and I can surf all I want WITH NO POP UPS....amazing.
You my friend need a serious lesson on how to use the internet. Stop going to bulshit websites and your comp will not be infected. Very simple my friend. I have maybe had 2 or 3 popups a month; on a bad month. BTW - Download SP2 for a good pop up blocker.

It's not microsoft's fault you overindulge in porn sites, Warez pages & File sharing programs.
I run a microsoft shop with very clear restrictions on what pages can be viewed and what programs can be installed, no issue with spyware at all.
Firefox still has trouble loading a number of javascripted pages that we use on a regular basis, and is SLOOOW compared to IE.
Great mid 90's movie with Angelina Jolie's tits and a pseudo girl-girl scene.
I had slack running on one of my desktop boxes until the power supply crapped out, I then salvaged half of the hardware off of it to use on other boxes, maybe I'll fire it back up sometime.
