this topic had been covered numerous times.

the only chips worth buying are the MarkD and JimC chips. The others are pointless to have.

I didn't even know ACS made a chip. I know Dinan makes one, but it only works effectively at WOT so you're basically paying money for 91 octane for only a certain percentage of your driving experience. The other chips (MarkD and JimC) work throughout the entire powerband.

That's the thing. When I was looking at an E30 I was going to possibly purchase, one of the things he mentioned was an ACS chip that improved this and that. I didnt comment about it and went on about other things on the car for I didn't know if i was the ignorant one, or him.
So yea. That's all I was trying to clear up.

I encountered some very noticeable detonation at WOT with 87 with a stock 153. So as far as buying higher grade gas, YMMV.

how exactly were you able to tell? i have an 87 325is with stock 153 & jc chip. im unsure of my fuel grade.. Nothing sounds weird to me.. i just want to know how it would be possible to tell if detonation is happening.

A loud knocking noise coming from forward of the firewall might be a good indication!

Momentary loss of power, for me it was usually at around 5 grand. I wasn't able to hear a knock, but I could definitely feel it. I went up to 91 and it miraculously disappeared.

Be for warned, detonation is a serious issue and will destroy an engine...Quick! Wrong fuel grade will cause your fuel vapor to explode instead of burn rapidly and smoothly like it should.:hitler:
