No Coding Plug on Instrument Cluster

So I've heard a lot about switching the coding plugs when swapping clusters. I've never actually found what it meant until the other day. There isn't a coding plug in my cluster. I mean there isn't a slot for the coding plug at all. My cluster came from an early 318i and now is in my 84 318i. what's the diagnosis on this? Does anybody have any information about swapping clusters that don't incorporate the coding plug in them? (Only the early models shouldn't have the coding plug, i'm pretty sure all the later e30's had coding plugs)

The coding plug on 84-85 318i/325e is the black plastic peg in the back. 86 on uses a chip but they still refer to it as a coded plug. It goes through the tach I believe. Just pull it out. I did this when using a 318i 7K tach in my 85 325 back in the day.

Ok that's what I thought, but looking at it, it's literally a piece of plastic. There is nothing electronic on it at all it's just a plastic peg.:?

Think of it as a KEY which hits certain tumblers (4 or 6 cylinder) inside the tach. This is how it was done before BMW incorporated the chip coding plug with the new style SI board that only had 1 red LED instead of 3.
