    Corrado Reliable DD?

I was thinking of keeping my e30 as my joy-garage-weekend-project car and using another car as a dd for work. I was thinking Miata since they are reliable but too small. I was thinking another e30, but what about Corrado? I like those but do not know about maintenance and reliability when it comes to those VWs. I love to see them in clean condition on the road though.

Getting up there in age and mileage so, at thi point not really. G60's fail early in life at about 85-120k range. Then you have a gutless pig.

VR6's have 2 different engines one a distributor style and the other a coil pack AAA engine that the coil packs failed, plus lack of coolant changes tended to cause the coolant to become corrosive and eat the hg and aluminum. There were other issues as well. I loved my G60 back in 89 but hell that was 20 years ago.

Like ANY car you buy the previous maintenance will determine how long it lasts as a daily driver. Buy something that has been in a good home most its life and not had the snot kicked out of it by a bunch of 16 yr. old kids. The Corrado will be no worse or no better then a comparable mk2/mk3 VW in terms of reliability. Prices for replacement parts may be more expensive from most parts stores because its for that car but most of the important stuff is identical to those found on your run of the mill jetta and golfs.

As M-technik-3 just said, the G60 motor has a weak charger. If the seller cant prove its been rebuilt in the past then expect it to blow up. they only last up to 200k kms before eating themselves. However the rest of that motor is dead simple and cheap and easy to maintain so that makes it desirable as a DD

VR6 have timing chains on the trans side of the motor which involves removing transmission and basically pulling the engine to replace. If they make noise they need to be replaced. that would be the biggest thing to look out for.

I say get a well sorted VR6 and have fun with it.

Forgot to mention the G60 has a forged crank so it will easily accept a turbo or another supercharger variant.

Most of the ones I've encountered in my vw days had some sort of annoying electrical gremlin. They are cool cars, but the G60s kinda suck.... sound cool tho. A well maintained vr6 would be the way to go, but they seem to fetch some decent dough. Check out vortex for more info. Good luck and keep us posted!

ive had both G60 and VR6 corrados, they are really great cars in their own respects, the g60 is more of a light throw around car. the vr6 is real comfy and makes a great daily driver, all day every day. both have their problems, but either thats well maintained will treat you well. i had my g60 for around 2 years, and other than basic maintenance never gave me any problems but it had a fairly newly rebuilt charger. same with the vr6, never gave me any troubles, i still own it after 2.5 years and i need to do the dreaded timing belt. its not TOO bad, but it is alot of work. only about 200$ in parts though.

neither are geared for the interstate. but both make great drivers, i have the vr6 now and honestly, i miss my g60. i think it was the boost, and it was a lot more balanced car. the vr6 is a heavy engine up over the front wheels. but the sound of a vr6 with a decent exhaust on it is music. i dont know what one i would choose if i had to do it all over again.

one last thing, engine parts are fairly easy to come by, because most of the VW's share these engines, the VR6 atleast. however, if you ever have any bodywork that needs done, expect to pay a premium for body parts, mostly front end parts, any hit to anywhere on the car will basically total it, not worth getting full coverage on them, expect to pay out of pocket for body repairs.

Bahaha so did I!! I cant believe I opened this thread and the first post I saw (yours) was exactly what I was thinking!

For what it's worth, my opinion of water-cooled VW's is about the same across the board as far as daily reliability. They arent necessarily bad, but when it comes time to do work on them it sucks. There are a lot of bad designs in most of the models I've seen from about ~'90-to-present. My opinion also comes from a direct comparison with similar BMW models. I work on BMW's primarily, but when I do work on water-cooled VW's I always think about how much better BMW's designs are for similar components.

That said, Corrado's are cool cars, and even despite the time-bomb nature of the G60's supercharger, those are neat motors. Especially if you put the motor in an old MK1 or MK2 GTI..

PS OP, your S52 is running great.

                  NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jettas, golfs, rabbits, and the like arent bad for dd, ive had all of them and never had issues with any of them. however, corrados are never known for reliability. theres always something wrong. you can fix everything, and as soon as youve done that something else will pop up and ruin your life.

I often think how A miata with a turbo would be fun, maybe with some nice wheels.

If you want a car that heavy and that shape/style why not get a coupe quattro?

not true. VWs can last long past the 300,000 mark. just the same as BMWs. g60s need some real love but they can be just as reliable as any e30.
PS i have been drinking so disregard any info i post.
