Are there any aftermarket hoods that open like "normal" cars?

    It's not a BMP bumper it's an Mtech1

There was much drama over that. Fuck that POS BMP fiberglass body kit crap.

got confused with something else haha. its just a valence in my eyes you can fuck it up by parking. i saw the start of your build on zilvia its probably one of the things that originally made me look into e30's.
on topic of the hood it is a pita i hit my head on the guide things on the back alot but its funny as hell when people jump back cuz the hood launches forward and they try to open from the front if theyre new to the car

Don't add insult to injury by quoting him in your sig

Seriously, though, 4 bolts hold entire hood on hinges. It's so simple to just lift hood off and put against a wall somewhere. Unless you're that pathetically weak.

No offense to him, I actually like his swap and who he is on the boards, that quote just threw me for a loop. I will run it for a day or so, then find someone else to quote. Maybe you, you never know!;)

sure the hood comes off with just 4 bolts, and the gas shock, and the water line
but for me on my car, when I pulled the hood, and then put it back on, it just wont sit right, sits high in the front
a friend who works in a body shop said they are a pain in the ass to get right if you stink it up, sure wish someone would show me how to fix it, never in a wreck, all stock metal

                back to the thread
to me , the hood and the way it opens is just one of the neat things about the bmw

and having a car with a modified hood ( early hot mustang) that the hood popped open on me while driving, and bent to shit, is another reason I like the hood "opening backwards"

Not that I really need to defend myself, but:

The lotus has never once failed on me. I drove an elise for 25000 miles and did nothing but tires and oil. The exige has 7000 miles on it and is without problems.

I HATE VWs. I'm actually a notorious VW hater on local boards. The rabbit is my parts hauler/drum kit hauler. It's fine for what it is. I would never ever mod it, nor think it was anything other than transportation. When I went looking for a car I didn't even know what I wanted, just something new, cheap, white, good MPGs and with a lot of room. Rabbit fit the bill, 0% financing I couldn't pass up, so I scooped it.

Maybe I just have good luck. I even drove an 04 range rover for 20K with only 65 dollars in maintenance.

I'd like to say that the way the hood opens IS cool and unique, and I clearly dig those things, it's just that I know it's going to bug me to work around it. I am OK with the idea of hood pins in the front and the roller things in the back, so maybe I'll do that when I get a light hood.

Since there is no aftermarket kit and I'm trying to get this project on the streets sooner than later, I'll probably stick with stock for the meantime.

Sounds like you have good luck.

I'll admit though, the hood opening conventionally would be kinda nice. Although the current hood provides a lot of character I'm not opposed to seeing you figure this out.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

seems to me like it's easier to take the hood off than to fab up new hinges. Maybe after 100 uses or so will it pay off in time savings. It think someone should do a cost-benefit analysis...

Oh yeah.. the customs agent tried to open my hood once and had no clue how to do it.. he was staring at it for about 5 minutes. That alone is worth keeping it the way it is.

                          Here's a good example.

Say your battery dies in your Exige. You leave the map light on, have a small drain, whatever, we've all had this happen.

That's cool, just open the trunk to get to the battery, right?

Oh wait, no. You have to do that from inside the car.

Cool, just unlock the car and open it from the inside, right?

Wait, the door locks are electronic. Whoops--you're SOL.

So, you can't get in your car and you can't charge the battery to get in your car. You go online and do a little searching and find the answer: remove a fucking body panel to gain access to the battery.

Sounds logical and convenient, thanks Lotus. At least your hoods latch the right way unlike those stupid old BMWs.

It's 3 screws to get to the battery and I only need to do that when I fuck up, so I don't think it's really a big deal... It's not like removing a hood everytime I want to tinker with something in my highly modified car...

I think that was a bad example.

That's like making an example out of me losing my keys and having to drive to my great aunt's house because i left a set there when they fell out while i had dinner on her hammock because it was a belated birthday party for my grandma who live 50 miles away and and and and and...

I'm unsure why you are so offended about the way that I feel about MY car. Did you design help design the hood or something? Are you jealous of my stuff? I'm sorry that I have a few nice things that I worked hard for. I don't understand...

Newman, you're all right in my book. The pins idea would give you the most access to the engine bay, without limiting you in reaching anything near the firewall, nor the core support. I personally haven't had very much trouble with the front-hinged hood getting in the way, but then again, I have a 76" reach.

I believe most people here don't grasp the extra utility/convenience this would give you, personally. Most modern BMW's (e39 and up) hinge from the back. You should be able to scrounge parts from any of them.
