The rear glass on these things costs upwards of like 20k if I am not mistaken. I have seen a couple around. One was in Portland a couple years back for like 7500.

WTF, was it plated in gold? No way it cost $4k to make an alternator for a passenger car!

I still have most of my clients invoices. If I'd actually bother going through the thousands of invoices to find it, I'd grab the part number for you. That way you can call the local dealer and see for yourself :p

It's ridiculous. I was curious to know if the alternator was bulletproof too. It didn't make that much sense because aside from the massive weight addition, I really didn't think there'd be a need for a special alternator (since it's not really an electrical load).

I don't know much about electrics, but at least to me it made no sense.

I also know why the price is so high is because there's only so many protection package 7 series out there. Think about how much an E30 M3 alternator costs. They made a few thousand of those cars.

Imagine how much an individual part costs for a car they made less than 1000 production units.

I believe Matt when he says a rear window is $20k.

They bought the part from a vendor (like Bosch) and alternators are pretty simple machines. $4k is price-gouging because no one wants to keep them in stock, and deserves a little extra for hunting one down if you're crazy enough to pay $4k for an alternator.

If it's a real protection package, $15K isn't bad. And if the alternator ever goes bad, just grab one off a 750i or something, I bet they're identical.

for $4k you could probably pay an engineer to design and build a new one from scratch. lol
