Have you checked your TPS? It will usually be a lean condition but worth checking the connector and voltage as it will cause sputtering and dying with a sporadic signal.

What about the coolant temp sensor? When my buddy's went, he would have the same problem. It is the blue one on top of your thermostat housing. 19bucks.
        Yours truly,

how would I check the tps?

I have also changed the coolant temp sensor when one of my afms where bad.... But after that I got a code for it, but the it went away. I tried unplugging it when it starts to go crazy but it didn't really do anything. I guess I can put the old one back in to see what happens.

Everyone thanx for continuing on helping me with this. It sux being carless.

In the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual it shows Super ETA & i,iS having a seven pin connector under the throttle body that is notorious for getting corrosion in the pins. The coolant temp sensor connects there and resistance from corrosion causes rich running and hard starting. This connector is C-191 and it was so problematic BMW issued a Service Bulletin on the problem. Once the corrosion starts it is near impossible to clean up. I had to cut my plug out of the harness last week and hardwire.

                Jef Rolison still 5 iX's

Holy shit, I forgot about the crud connector!

                  CRC "Electrical Cleaner" FTW.

                  Late model M20s only.

                  Good catch, Jeff!

hey guys i checked the plug it was pretty clean it had electric grease.

But... i did find out the coil to distributor wire was broken at the coil. it was all burnt up too. i made a wire out of two old spark plug wires i had. Since both sides had to be male. the car hasnt turned off yet now. But does have a weak start and runs a little rougher....

do you guys think it was the wire? thnx guys
