Touche, both ES engine I've worked on were 88's one from a 528e and the other a 325es, didn't think about that. Well don't I feel stupid.

It's all good. As the cars get older, people tend to switch things like badges, differentials, etc. So it's not uncommon to see an "88 325eS" even though there were no such thing in the US. The 325eS was only available in 86-87. In 88, they only had 325 base model (Super ETA) and 325i/iS/iX. Sounds like someone added an "eS" badge to a base model 325.

        Ok so im lost here...
My pistons on my 1986 325es had a curvature in the head of the piston when we open the motor and the mechanic noticed it.. We compared to normal eta pistons and they where different.
Thats why i was asking the question if there where differences...

Does anyone have pictures of the 2 pistons ETA and SETA side by side... so we can see the top differences?

Although the vast majority of parts are the same, much like every m20 engine (i, e, or es)....there is a significant difference between the "e" and "es" engines which the op mentioned but doesn't know why. The seta pistons have a curvature in the head of the piston which creates a slightly lower compression that added more power to the engine. You will notice that the eta pistons are flat tops where the seta pistons are not. This is important because until bmw released the i to the us it was the fastest bmw 3 series available since the 2002tii stopped production in '77 (i think?). The compression ratio and peak hp of the engines are different so even though it's a change you don't notice visually it's the reason why people building stroker engines etc, look for the seta pistons vs the normal eta's. Also eta engines are the worst engine for boosting due to their high compression. I know i'll get flamed and some people here have done it, whatever, i don't care, but the lower the compression the better for boosting.

Is your car a US spec or Euro spec?

                  The bumpers tell all.

Also. In the E28 the Super eta was only 1988, I thought the e30 was the same way.

Someone probably changed them at some point. What engine do you have? Pics would help.

                      base 325?

I was hoping that I could get help on the specifics of the 325, 325e, 325es lineup so that I may better understand my own vehicle...

I recently purchased a 1986 325. Through doing the readup on this model my understanding is that the tachometer should redline at 4500rpm, mine does not. My tachometer reads as a 325i but it does 'cut out' at about 5200rpm.

Ive done a VIN lookup on this model and this is what comes back.

The information in this decoder says that I have a M20 B25 but my understanding is that I should have an M20 B27 is that correct?

I had somone look at my car (someone who has a lot of experience with E30s and he had mentioned that it looks as if I have a 325i head on my engine.

                      Any ideas?

my 318ti got 40mpg at 75mph. I loved that car, but it was never the same after getting hit in the rear at 40MPH while at a red light.
