Doh, should I pull it back off?

I realize after we torqued down the last bolt on the flywheel last night, that we didn't get that big circular washer in there between the bolts and the flywheel.

Pulling it back off isn't that big a deal, I'll just need to order more flywheel bolts and wait for them to show up since these have already been tightened down.

Or would just throwing some red loctite on them be sufficient to reuse?

I reuse flywheel bolts all the time... lol... never had a problem. *shrugs* if you want to be safe id get new ones then. I'm not sure the starter will mate up 100% without that ring.

    Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

^Does that spacer go between the flywheel and the engine or between the flywheel and the bolts?

If it's between the flywheel and the bolts, it wouldn't change the orientation of flywheel vs the trans.

My guess is in front of the flywheel. Hmm.

im quite sure its between the flywheel and bolts, the other way would be a nightmare to get them on and i dont remember dealing with that.

Goes between the flywheel and bolts. What flywheel are you using?

M20 kindly sir. Had it lightened and machined to fit the E34 pan.

What do you think on the bolts? New or reuse?

I'd just reuse them. Slather some red loctite on them and torque them back down.

Damn that shim! Oh well at least I realized it before we had the clutch and trans bolted up!

how come red, isnt red for mega torque and require heat to sometimes remove
at least tahts how we use it on tractors on the farm
                    red for big nasty abuse
                    blue for anything else

it's pretty much only there to protect the surface of the flywheel from the heads of the bolts. i suppose it might distribute the clamping force more evenly, but in any case it's not vital for those of you who dont have one :)

Having done this same job this past weekend, it was a relief to see this phrase. I've never struggled so much getting a transmission back on the engine, I would hate to have take off again!

Buddy has a lightened flywheel, will likely have cams and undoubtedly will have a chip raising his rev limit. With the issues many racers are having with bolts backing out from harmonics related to those specific mods, I would not hesitate to douse those bolts in red. Of course he may never have an issue but it's better safe than sorry in my opinion. A good impact gun will zip those red loctite covered bolts right out.

Bob, if that shim is purely there to protect the surface of the flywheel, do you think leavng it out would be better? More threads of the bolts would be engaged that way.
