I almost bought a dell, but ended up building my own...for much cheaper.

              AMD 64 bit 3200+
              DFI nForce3 mobo
              Gig of 3200
              samsung dvd-rw
              samsung 80 gig hard drive
              Antec case
              Thermal take venus 12
              Logitech 5.1
              Samsung 17" LCD 12ms 600:1 CR

But I'd rather own a dell than an HP or gateway.

if you can't/don't want to build your own rig, then dell is the best choice for sure.

Indeed. I've owned a Dell for a while and its been reliable. Dell has fixed any issues I've had with it promptly as well, including new HD when mine died, it had an extra 20gb too.

The new Dell cases are also extremely clean and easy to work in. Pretty much everything is screwless and color coded.

what system are you looking at? Dimension 2400? 3000? 4700?
I dont know i tihnk it was the 3000, its fun to mess around on the website, I take the cheapest desktop i can find on the site, then mod the fuck out of it meaning add a pretty huge HD and a shit load of ram, and it still comes up really cheap, i think im gonna spring for one.

Meh, you can get a decent machine for cheap, but honestly you can build your own and have an overall better computer for a few bucks more

Theres no way I could come close. I could get something together by myself for relatively cheap, but then you have to figure that I would have to buy an OS, additional software, plus the flatscreen monitor. I dont tihnk the price would come close to what Dell has to offer.

err...i'm sure if you shop around you will be able to buy your own and build it from the ground up for less than you would getting it from dell. even if it was not, you could still get higher quality parts for comparable prices. i'm only saying this because it sounds like you actually know what you are doing when you are tinkering with your computer. if you already have all the software licenses, then you can most definitely find a cheaper solution.

                              my rig:
amd barton 2600+ overclocked to 202x11.5 (2323mhz), benchmarks higher than 3200+ systems. All I did was upgrade my heatsink/fan combo to copper with a 102cfm 92mm fan blowing over it.
cpu cost with new cooling: 105 dollars
                              Motherboard: Abit NF7-S2: 80 dollars
Memory: 2x512 Samsung CAS 2.5 running in dual channel: 160 dollars

345 dollars sound cheap for a system outperforming an amd 3200+?
I retired my E30 for now...

Buy an OS? okay even if you wanted that under 100 bucks.

You can build an Athlon64 Rig for a rather cheap price, with name brand components, and similar cost to dell, plus its a faster machine.
