It likely has a bad clutch pack and that's why it's slipping and/or taking a long time to shift.

Either way, you're going to have to replace the transmission on this car.

The internal clutches in auto transmissions generally wear out at around 150k or so.

Plus the car will be far more enjoyable to drive with a 5 spd.

How much do you want to spend? I looked at your craigslist and you're right it might be a good idea to travel to find a good car. There are probably a few on sale here and people who may be willing to check out a craigslist car that's local to them.

keep looking. you get what you pay for, and e30s are a pain sometimes.

Buying an out of state car is always 300$+ more than in state since you have to reregister it. You guys are the sound of reason. If I buy the car and the tranny fails. its my own damn fault...

If you're going to swap the tranny, might as well swap in an s50..... I think you should keep looking unless he'll come down on price. If he neglected to change trans fluid, he's probably neglected other aspects of the car.... There's a really nice looking 5-spd car down here in Colorado, but that's a hell of a haul for you.

PM me for detailing services in the Longmont / Boulder Area in Colorado!

a getrag 260 isn't anywhere near 150lbs. it's surprisingly light. I'd guess around 60-70lbs. the rear diff is heavier.

Honestly if the cars is clean enough and the interior is good, do it. 5 speed swaps are vary doable, especially concedering all the info that people have giving on diy threads. Also they have become vary affordable.

                        wat

You'll have to register and pay taxes on the car in Washington regardless of where you buy it from.

In general, California cars are in better shape at a lower price than e30's up here.

                        I'd keep looking elsewhere.

Thats almost exactly right. I currently have a boxed up tranny/fly wheel/clutch in my garage that is like... 103 lbs

Unless you are comfortable with and have the knowledge of doing a trans swap from auto to manual, I would pass on this car.
