i would not buy this for an e30 personally, but it is a cool engine. if you can't resist, take the oil cap off first and look in there and see if the internals are clean. if they are, the car has probably had good maint over its life time. get a compression tester, battery and a pair of jumper cables. pull the plugs. run the cables to a good ground on the engine and to the positive starter terminal lead. bump it over a few times and check the compression in all the cylinders. i would throw 2 quarts of oil in it if i were you.
