    Help!!!!!

I was drivin my 318is the other day and went to take off from the stop sign and i heard a loud popping sound and the engine just revved up but the car did not move. Tried to make it go but it would just keep rolling back. Got it towed home today and the drive shaft spins but the tires dont. While in idle the front of the car makes a terrible rattling noise coming from under the engine. I'm thinkin lsd can anyone comfirm that? Any comments on the rattle? and if it is the lsd anyone have one for sale? Like I said its a 91 318is and
ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!!!!! I need to get this running asap!!! Cant afford to not have my e30 with two jobs and full time college!!!

+1 on the diff or halfshaft suggestion. Get the rear of the car on some jackstands - fire it up, put in gear and see/hear what's happening. A quick visual inspection of the halfshaft hex bolts is in order. I've known a few E30s where these things had a tendency to back out. If some are missing, this could be your problem.

this was happening to me at one point, but i caught them before they came out all the way, thankfully.

as for the rattling, it could just be the gears chattering in your transmission. if you push in the clutch, does the sound go away?

Put the rear wheels up on stands and drive. Listen for noises and anything unusual. I hate rear end work.

It is the shaft that connects the rear diff to the rear wheels. A.K.A. rear axle. I dunno the price, but it is a stroke job.

If the bolts fell out does that mean the entire axle needs to be replaced or just new bolts?

if the bolts fell out, go pocket that shit at the junkyard. they are the same bolts on all E30's IIRC.
