My last one had 73K original...
I have had several, parted out most of the ones I had because they would cost more to fix than what they are worth....
no offense but the one you have described sounds like a parts car from the serious rust issues....
don't kid yourself with these cars, don't look at it as an investment if serious bodywork is needed, the market is down on these cars now and you can buy them cheaper than you can fix them...
S38 rebuild is $6K in parts alone NO LABOR...most S38's need rebuilding by 200k, a new rebuilt head will run $4K, trannies are $$$ and the parts are drying up daily....
What would I pay for a rust bucket M5, No more than $3500/$4K tops....and only if the interior was nice and all the other parts were in decent shape...
Prolly, $2500 from the sounds of it

I got a beat but rust free one for 2500 bucks a couple years ago. Ended up selling it for only a little more after putting some mileage on it. Good condition ones will go for nice prices, poor ones aren't worth much...

Then again.. we ought to both listen to BDK and not buy a M5 to restore.

What you say sounds reasonable, but a decent one to either beat to death tracking it, or slowly restore could be a break even deal in a few years; 5-6 or so dont ya think?

There is no such thing as this with an E28 M5.

He's 110% accurate though. I know a guy who bought one 5-6 years ago with 16k miles on it in immaculate condition and he still put about/over $30k into it bringing it up to his "standard" for perfection. No rust, no wrecks.

Id be stretching my priorities a bit going after this one, so Ill probably pass. Thanks for the input.

The asking was 9, I got him down to 5800 and I backed off. Kind of a dickhead move, but its natural to be skeptical when someone is that flexible.

Anyone wants info just shoot me a pm.

US e28 M5s were supposed to reach collector status. Yeah sure. I doubt the few hundreds extra they made killed their rarity. The Euro M5 is highly sought after both in Europe and in the US, while the US M5 is disregarded. So, spending money on one is not wise.

I guess that the (very) ugly diveboard bumpers may be the reason for the US M5 lack of love... So ugly. Engine being 40hp shy from the Euro version, and all the extra weight can also account...
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

I owned an E28 M5 for almost 5 years and my friend has owned FOUR of these cars. The S38 is NOT the maintenance nightmare everyone talks about - yes, it requires regular valve adjustments (just like an M20 or M30, but with special tools and shims) and the timing chain guides should be replaced every 100K miles. Outside of that, it is dead reliable and can rack up big mileage without trouble (I've seen 200K mile S38s that have never been apart and still have good compression).

Front brakes are M5 specific but you can source front calipers easily enough. The Getrag 280 tranny is also M5 specific and has a reputation for being fragile. Of the six cars my friend and I collectively owned only mine was showing some signs of weakness with the second gear synchros. They can be replaced on the cheap with the Getrag 265 from the 535.

Interior parts are where the E28 M5 can get pricey in a hurry. Most are NLA and those who are hoarding the leather specific pieces are asking big $$.

All other parts and maintenance items are common to the E28 and will be no more expensive than a 535i / is.

Honestly, of all the cars I've ever owned, the E28 M5 is the ONE car I regret selling. Values have been generally flat for some time, but nice, low mileage, unmolested examples are starting to see value gains (just like all E28s).

Here's a video clip of my old car:

I paid 13k for mine but it had the Euro M-tech bumper conversion, new black interior with manual sports seats, new timing chain and guides and other stuff. I didn’t want another project so I bought one that was already “done”.

My old M5 right after I sold it,
I had just gone thru the mechanicals(tune Up),
Suspension (SLS Deleted Last set of Koni 4way Adjust),
                              Valve Adjustment,
                              Brake upgrade,
                              exhaust upgrade,
eurolights mit washers, done corrrectly and complete,
I put the BBS RZ's on it, ect, euro, euro euro,
I bought it with 73K from OO, sold it with 107K.
I had tucked the DB Bumpers but
The NO, euroed bodied it and loves it, he agrees with me, one of the strongest running s38's I have ever driven... didn't need a radio because it was an S38 at WOT...
Yes, I miss this car and my wife cried the day it left...
