as mentioned before, the last 90 degrees are REALLY tight. be sure to flush you oil GOOD, then flush it again. you dont want water in your bearings and shit

$22 shipped. and i will probly redo the whole thing once i land a job, at this point it needs to run <--- and this is all. but ya today got it warm and dropped the oil, added more oil, let it run for a few, came out clear. so knock on wood in saying its fixed.

hahaha dude i hope you learn that 22lbs means nothing its that 90 then 90 that'll kill u. i put a torque wrench on mine to check what it was on that second 90 and it was something serious like 180 lb ft or something. i hope you learn that autozone can sure as hell sell you a whole bunch of crap but can not tell you a damn thing about how to fix it properly. whats more is that theeir brand of alternators are technically wrong for our cars - they occasionally can work but are in fact technically wrong. do yourself a favor and buy a bentley manual or research on this website - always ignore autozone if at all possible

                BMP Design
                Bavauto
                pelican parts

those are the guys you want to deal with - anyone who uses autozone for more than batteries sparkplugs and oil & fluids - maybe the occasional K&N airfilter is just plain retarted - or has way more money than you and I.

oh and check out my thread

i got the bolts from bavauto but i couldn't find just the head gasket on bavauto and autozone can order them so i picked one up from them and it fits fine, same size, everything the same as oem. ya they did fuck me over on the torque rate tho. im about to go out to grab an oil filter and some oil to finish this up. think i may have a talk with them...

i Don't know where these guys got their info 22ft/lb +90+90 is a load of shit. I use a 3/8 impact set on about half to put on theadgaskets. I just impact them on until the gun won't turn em no more. I done about 20 of these motors like that. Ive done that with m10s too.

Glad you worked it out. We will see if it holds. Hope it does.

As Im sure you have learned, there are a few not so kind-hearted people on this forum. Nevermind their attitude, but do learn from your mistakes. BEST approach, come here and research before you tear into your car to the level of a head gasket change, right!

you learn by making mistakes. live and learn. its all good. have learned alot about this car in doing this project, and would feel very comfortable doing it again... hope I don't have to, but I would. now im having some starting/running problems, Im pretty sure its just a vac leak tho.

Why did you need to replace the head gasket? You said this project cost you $80, so does that mean you didn't replace the timing belt when you pulled the head? I assume something happened to make your gasket fail... did it overheat? Did you have the head checked to be sure it is within spec?

Ya I didn't have to replace the timing belt. The block looked very fresh when we pulled the head and the belt also. I'm not sure if a PO had it replaced. I do know the first owner took very good care of the car( I have a bunch of BMW service recipes) and I know he had the car the longest so I am under the assumption he did replace it. No the cause of the fail as far as I can tell is just dry rot. A few things on the car have had to be changed for the same problem. I gave it a leveler test and it came out good. And it has run good today just has some start/idle issues that I am leaning on a vac leak, again dry rot in a few places. Shouldn't be hard to fix, already have most new lines. The reason I dug into in the fist place was a slight ping in #6, and sure enough there was a break in that part of the gasket causing huge compression loss. Since gasket replacement no more ping and way more pick up/power. Was a bit of a budget replacement but worked well overall and helped me learn a bunch about the m20 and stupid autozone. Car also got new fuel lines during this project along with a toggle starter switch and fresh paint (white). I'm very pleased with it over all and very thankful for all the help.
