You lost control of an all wheel drive car on dry pavement and hit with a shitload of force. You also "don't know what happened". That statement right there should scare you. I've been driving for 14+ years, lots of track time, autox, inclement/dirt conditions and other stuff. I've spun cars, I've had "offs", all sorts of little things. In each and every one of these incidents, I can tell you exactly what I did wrong, and why it happened. You took an underpowered AWD car that understeers massively by design, and spun it off at a high rate of speed, and you have no idea why.

You were driving stupid and way over your head.

glad you're ok, but I have no idea how you managed to do that. firstly, you had be going way too fast. it almost sounds like you panicked when the car got a little loose, and lifted off the throttle, which will throw any E30 into snap oversteer (yes even the ix). By that point it's too late and nothing is going to save you. both feet in and hold on..

I'd reccomend some track time for your next car where they teach you how to recover and why you lost control. I've spun my ix a # of times, and every time, it was lifting off the throttle that caused it. luckily I've only ever done that in a closed enviroment.

I have to agree with charlie, the fact that you have no idea how it happened should scare you.

Yea i mean i think nando has a point, ive never spun the car so i didn't know how to stop it, ive been told never hit the brakes, so i didnt do both feet in. And ive only been driving a year and a few months. But I wasnt going fast at all till I gave it gas to try to recover. I guess a good driver isnt being able to make the car handle and go fast but being able to save it aswell.

if you hadn't been going too fast, you wouldn't have lost control of your car. it's pretty much that simple. But your idea of what too fast is changes as you get older, too. being such a young driver, you really don't know what that means yet (well, maybe you do today!).

braking can be fine if the situation warrants.. I think you were hopelessly out of control anyway. basically, by the time you've lifted off the throttle (the moment you felt the car get loose), it's already done. You are going to spin. It's just a matter of how far you go, and if there are any objects to hit before you stop. The best thing you can do is try to slow down, which means brake and clutch.

if it were a closed environment, you could have tried it again. Only the next time you got loose, you would have stayed on the throttle. Or maybe gone a bit slower. Chances are there wouldn't be much to hit other than some cones or grass at the worst. You get a nice do over to correct your mistakes and learn. Not so on the street.

either way, it's too late now, but if you really want to own one of these cars again, I suggest learning how to control it so you don't lose another one. and of course you were really lucky to not have been hurt badly. Yours isn't nearly as bad as Drew's '87 325is. that guy nearly lost his legs.

This is why you need to practice these things in a controlled environment, like a car control clinic, skid school, high-performance driving school, or even auto-cross. You shouldn't be sitting there thinking about what to do when the car is sliding on the street...you should have already practiced what to do so that it's become an instinct.

The only way to get there is to get proper instruction and practice like hell. Until then, drive slower and avoid the temptation to "drive hard" when your buddies are around. A bunch of 17-year-old boys dicking around on a dark country road = recipe for disaster.

Being a good driver is (a) knowing your limitations, (b) knowing your car's limitations, and (c) appreciating the road conditions. Then, taking all 3 variables into account, adjusting your driving accordingly. A good driver is never over the limit on the street and never gets caught with his pants down.
