I have never gotten a credit card, I prefer to take out some loans and pay them off in a timely manner and it does well for the credit. A $5,000 auto loan and a $2,000 personal used for a laptop have given me ~900 for a credit score, and I didn't have to spend any money I didn't have - just the same payment every month taken right out of my checking account.

He's probably referring to the newer Vantage score system that ranges from 500-990. The FICO score is much more widely used and ranges from 300-850.

Ok so instead of doing something dumb, go to your bank(please tell me you have a bank, and don't just keep your money in a shoe box) and get their debit card. Most can be run as credit to avoid the fees but still take the money right out of checking and the bank cuts it off if you go to far over what you in your account. This is what I do and has saved my ass from a big bill later on. Also most banks have websites and their debit cards keep up with the website in near real time. So you can always know how much you have left to spend.
