where do i find my ECU #?

    where do i find my ECU #?

    what is the number grouping that you use to tell what ecu you have? as in 173, 153, etc etc, etc.

    i was told that my had a chip in it along with the split sceond arc2a and maf conversion. i just opened it up and it is stock. i was looking to get a used chip and try it out, but i am not sure which one it is i have

    the car is a 91 325i, motronic 1.3, the ecu has a white label and says made in spain.

    help is appriciated.

      it's the last three digits on the P/n.

        ok, so right under the word bosch it says 0 261 200 525 and in little numbers 965

        on the bottom of the tag it has a bmw symbol then
        1 730 527 and in small numbers 001

            no reman stickers on it anywhere.
            wrong ecu maybe?
            it doesn't even say remunufactured by bosch on it.
            if it is wrong that would explain some things and just be another hack that the PO had done to the car.

                525 is OEM, also used in some e34 525i cars with b25s IIRC.

                If your chip won't work with 525 for some reason I have a good 173.

                  i don't have a chip yet.
                  the car started acting up last night, dying randomly. stomp test gave me a 1215 code for maf issues. started playing with wires because of the split second maf conversion and the po's crappy install job. i always start there when i get that code. after searching around without it starting and pulled the ecu to see if there was anything wrong with it. opened it up and nothing was burnt, i looked at the chip and it still had the plastic cover on it . popped it off and found out it was a stock chip.

                  i reinstalled it abd did a stomp test and got a 1444, but it will not fire and the plugs are wet with gas . so either they are gas fouled from before or i am not getting a spark. i am removing them and cleaning them right now si can try again.

                        just a revision of the same hardware/software. if you open up a 173 and 525 and set them next to each other, they're virtually indentical.
