      Most people do this...

It's popular, cheap, and pretty straight forward.

Well, I can tell you what I have found so far. S52 e36 m3 motor seems to be one of the most powerful and well supported swaps. This gets you about 240 hp at the crank and the regular m52, which is a similar non M motor, willl get you 200 hp. The other thing I can tell you is that this site suffers from many people who just say "search". So, when you go to search for something, you will not find as much info as you hope for, because much of it just says "search". However, on this topic, there are some good past threads. But people could save your hours and build a better library of archives if they would just answer your question.

This question itself tells you're not going to swap anything.

I don't think anyone here did an engine swap (as an upgrade, not because of old engine failure) thinking about "Best bang for the Buck".

No matter how accurately you calculate your costs it will always turn out more than you planned.

            That said - search

I disagree. Yes it will end up going over your initial budget. But there is always a more efficient way to do it and asking those who have done it already is the way to go. After doing my searching, I learned that I want and S52 OBD1. When I started out, I thought I just wanted an M50.

nope, 7900. Plus BMW later lowered the redline because of early bearing problems.

really, nando? wow, 100 rpms is so far off.

Just save yourself the headache and buy my car. I'm tired of it. Fully built s52 motor, coilover e30 m3 5 lug suspension. $15k. (puts me in the hole about $10k)

                  maybe I should start a f/s thread...

well AFAIK it was changed to 7600 after the update. and, yes, 7900 isn't 8k-9k. BMW builds engines with flat torque curves, not peaky dyno queen motors. :)

oh yeah, don't sell it. stop modding it and drive it for a while. Working on cars sucks, driving them is where the fun is!

                      touche.

and i'm tired of fucking working on it. I do just want to drive it (hence the sig), but it's always one issue after another. Should have just bought an e46 m3 for what I have into this ef'n thing. Bah.

BMW said in the press information at the launch of the E60 M5 that every 250rpm over 8000rpm quadruples the wear on the engine (so 8500rpm redline = x16 the wear)

Hmmmm... pipe dream. I have dreams about pipes - the ones that deliver beer from the keg room in a pub.

                            Mmmm... beer.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. This swap plan of mine is a 1-3 years window. TNG seem like great guys and im 99% sure i will be working with them on this.

I dont see a problem saving the funds, the only problem is having 3 cars atm (still have my og Civic Hatch).

I will do a lot more "search"
