Hello. My first post. It seems like the e30/m50 swap seems to be popular. Is it street legal? Do I go to the rmv and tell them. What paperworks goes along with the swap. Most places where I read said all you need to do is pass safety and emmisions and your all set.
Laws concerning engine swapping???

No there are no laws, that I know of.
Emmissions testing is the only thing, and M50 engines are extremely clean burning, and will pass.
My brothers E30 M3 with a built 3.2L S50 passes the test at 17 PPM, which is fabulous. Oh yea, and the car has no catalytic converter. :D

In most places, there will be no problem. With the age of these cars, all they will do is the usual tailpipe sniffer test for emissions, no OBDII check or anything. Kaleefohnya may have some other emissions nonsense, but the rest of the US is pretty easy.
Newer (OBDII Cars) have some trouble with emissions & swaps due to the test involving reading of the OBDII board, and in france, it is technically illlegal.
But france sucks, we already know this.

I think the common practice is to not let them know (they might jack your rates up) unless you specifically document everything(if you have a huge plan that will cover every last cent in case of a loss)Originally posted by ///M42 sportwhat about for insurance purposes?

Up in Washington I just register through a county that doesn't
have emissions regs, therefore, no emissions. Pretty easy but
they're crack down on shit like this unfortunetly.
BTW Anyone think my FC3S that shoots 2 foot flames will pass
EMS or DOT when they dereg? 8)「 Terror from the Rising Sun 」Comment

An M50 swap is even smog legal in California where we have the toughest emission standards in the country. If it can pass here, it'll pass pretty much anywhere. About the only catch for Calif. based cars is keeping mods in check. Chips, cold air intake, cams, exhaust are fine. Forced induction kits can be an issue.
The clean air freaks out here want our cars polluting no more than a skateboard :x

back when I went to the dinan meeting, he was talking about how the restrictions are so strict in the future that the special testing has to be done to seperate the "emissions" of the plastic components of the car so they don't interfere with smog testing.
