Can I suggest an iX?
Well, if you're gonna buy a truck, those Toyotas are near bulletproof. I'm from the west coast so I don't really know what "not a lot of rust" means. Other than that, looks like a fun truck.Grant Wescott

I owned a Toyota 4x4 pick up for about 7 years. It had the V6 so mileage wasn't as good as the 4-banger.....but it still gave me trouble free service for many miles. A friend of mine had a similar Toyota with the 22RE motor. He bought it new and put 257K miles on it in 6 years before selling it. With the exception of a clutch, starter and battery replacement....it never let him down.

I've got a 90 4 runner w/ the v6, and had a 92 pickup with the 4 banger.
the 22re had 245,000 miles on it when i bought it, and i drove the piss out of it. I never changed the oil, just put more in it when it would start making noise, I'd lugg the piss out of it (go over those big 10 foot long speed bumps at 5mph with a 3,000lb trailer. leave it in 2nd gear and just floor it after the speed bump, motors don't like it, but this one took it like a champ)
anyways if you don't jump on this one, look for an 85, it has the solid axle up front which makes it easier to lift, and easier to offroad with (IFS is a PITA)
good luck, htey are fun trucks

Despite the reputation, not all Toyotas are bulletproof. For one thing, be wary of Toyota head gaskets, especially the V6 and straight six. They seem to have identified this systemic problem early but they did not fix it for over 15 years.
I bought my '85 4Runner new with the 22RE and 5 sp and it was OK, but the head gasket failed at 24K then again at 75K and 110K miles. My mother's Cressida lasted to 68K before it needed a head gasket, my bro's 22RE went to 80K before it needed one, my other bro's V6 truck needed 2 gaskets in 150K. My sister-in-law got a lemon V6 4Runner; Toyota replaced the motor at 50K miles but she had the head gasket fail 60K miles later. These motors are definitely not the same after a head gasket replacement.
My 85 had lots of problems with the solid axle turning knuckles. They are a big weak point. Second gear failed at 90K in my truck and failed in my bro's at 75K, both 5 sp.
All of these vehicles were in SoCal. I used mine 10 or so times a year on dirt roads (desert and mtns) but I would not buy another one.Mike A
