Ports on side of transmission? 1990 325i 5-speed

I was under the car yesterday removing the exhaust and inspecting the transmission when i noticed two threaded holes on the drivers side of the trans. What are these ports for? If i had to guess i would say a transmission cooler? Anyone know what im talking about? There was also nothing threaded into these holes...

I'm not sure if I totally follow. You said there's two threaded ports.....is something screwed into these (a la plugs) or just holes that are exposing the inside of the trans? I have the same gearbox but never noticed these before. As for a transmission cooler....I don't think something like that was ever offered. It would make sense if this were an E30 M3 gearbox where its bloodlines closely resemble its racing counterpart.
