    Porsche 912

I know some of you here are P-car guys. Im not asking for links and other stuff, but what you think of 912's. I think it could quench my thirst for a P- Car. I would probably try to swap in a 6 cyl for a little more power than the measly VW 4 Cyl.. I dont know, the body shape of the 911/912 has always inttrigued me. I think this cheaper alternative could do it for me. Has anyone of you ever driven one, are there any major differences b/w the 911 and 912 (other than the 912 is about a 35-40 yr old car)?

Every 912 I've seen has been in 911 price range. They were unloved during their time, and finding nice ones is hard and expensive. That being said, any porsche of that vintage is going to be an exercise in futility and wallet usage, so go for it. You might also want to look at the 914's, as they're a little more common, and tend to be in a little better shape.

Yeah. I expected that response. The 912s that i look at have some body issues first and foremost. I tihink a 912 would be more of a "tide me over until i can afford a 911" type of deal. I bet it would be a blast to own a nice one though.

*edit* the 914 bodystyle doesnt really do it for me.

I've driven 911's and 912's, they're both great. 912's are cheaper to own and operate, and they still have the classic shape of a 911. I've seen them for as low as 3500 in good condition, around here at least.

            Hope that helps

I have driven many 912s and 911s hence me being a porsche mechanic. The differences between the 2 of them is ALOT. body wise they are the same but everything else is different. If you want todo the 6cyl swap later on I would get a 911 at that point. The mounting points in the engine bay are completly different and you would need to do some frame work to change them.
The 912s do not impress me alot. They are way under powerd and are kind of useless to me. I have a biased opinion from being spoiled by 911s and turbos so take it for what ever its worth. 914s are the only car Porsche has ever made that is worth more now than you could buy it for new. ;) Just a little random info there :) If you are looking for a 912 PM me. I know of one for sale in really descent/good condition with new paint and a motor rebuild. It needs some interior work but that is very minimal. Black on Black and I think he is asking around $9k for it.

If you can't afford a 911 you can't afford a 912 either. They don't have a VW engine (other than the mid 70's 912e), it's more like the 356 engine. Porsche parts and Porsche prices.

I own a '76 912E (my first car) and my Dad has a '68 912 coupe that he is restoring. I've never ridden in a vintage 912, but the E is a really fun little car. If you are looking for something that will pin you to the seatback, this isn't the car for you. If will toss you off the side of the seat, though; if handles a lot better than the 318is with GC coilovers I just bought today (e30Matt's old car). Granted I don't have a lot of experience with the 318, and I haven't pushed it very much yet. The 912E is very tossable, I love the steering feel in a rear engined, 2300lbs car without power steering. Just for comparison, though, the 318is is a little quicker in a straight line(though this is with intake, exhaust, chip, and cams, I don't know how a stock 318 would compare.)
As for parts, the E uses a Type IV VW engine, so these parts are fairly cheap. Any chassis, susp., brakes, or bodywork will be regular Porsche prices. The old 912 is just as expensive as a 911 partswise (my dad has been ordering a lot of parts lately :) )
PM me if you want any more info.

For the reference, if I found a 912 with a decent body, it would get a 350 smallblock.

Just figured I had to disclose that.

the weight distribution is bad enough as it is with a 225lbs engine...but I guess with a 350SBC you could make up the time on the straights :D

912 prices are on the rise. The last pricing report had them up around 3k from a few years ago and still rising. I wouldnt recommend it for an engine swap. If you really had to swap something I'd look for a post '73 911 with no engine (an abandoned project car). Otherwise an early 70's 911 would make a nice toy, and just think down the road you could do an RSR replica.
