to buy, or not to buy?

I just looked at this black e30 vert on clean beige interior at a Mercedes shop that i use to work at. Here is the deal. The car basically doesn't shift into 3rd gear and the front control arms and rear bushings are shot. also need new tires

The good: top, dash, paint, interior are all in great condition. shes a looker, other than the is front lip (paint is kind of worn)
Another thing: the car has a salvage title due to theft of front bumper and seats.
with 170k on the odometer and last timing belt replacement at 118k it is in desperate need of a timing belt
how much is she worth? The guy won't go lower than 2500
my mechanic gave me an estimat of 1650 for the tranny and control arm and bushings

Find another car. That guy is a jackoff if he thinks he's gonna get $2500 for a car with a bad trans and a salvage title. Fuck him, there's plenty of E30s to be had in southern california

If you drive your e30 on stairs, you're gonna have a bad time.

If he wont go lower that $2500, he'll probably have the car for a while due to the fact that most people steer clear of salvage titled cars.

He'll eventually get tired of it taking up space and he'll take less for it. Even then, I don't like the idea of a salvage title. Seems like a lot of headaches waiting to happen with registration, finding hidden damage, etc. (although I have no experience with it)

Seriously. If you really want the car and you don't want to pay a ridiculous price you're going to have to let him stew for awhile.
            paint sucks

First time I've ever heard of salvage via theft.
Guess I'd feel better about owning a salvage if it was just due to parts that were essentially removed and replaced (rather than collision damage repair). Given age and condition, its title status won’t have too much influence on its value.
But yeah, even disregarding title status, needed maintenance alone should bring selling price under 1K.
Ask him if you can score some of the shit he is smokin.

so your basicly looking to pay 4k for the car, Remeber gotta smog, update tags etc etc.. and any back fees or parking tickets.. For that much money you can find a VERY VERY clean e30. Best bet is to search on craigslist or look on this fourm. Good Luck!
