    New Windshield

I had a new windshield installed yesterday. The old one was so pitted that on a sunny day I couldn't see through it. The final straw was crack that kept growing. So instead of running the risk of being stopped by the po po for a cracked windshield (which would have led to a fix-it ticket for the tint and no front plate), I bit the bullet and got new glass.

It was much, much cheaper than expected. $120 out the door for the glass, labor and tax. It's not OE BMW, but it is new glass with 'factory tint' on the whole thing (you may be able to see the difference between the two in the pic) and the typical darker strip across the top. The new glass makes the whole car look a few years newer (IMO).

$120... that seems like a good price.

had mine replaced for 95 bux. Its nice. No pitting or small spots from where rocks hit.
Its very easy to install a windshield on a e30.

Yeah, I know I wanna replace it. The OEM glass is always better quality than replacement stuff though, and living in Colorado, especially during the winter, the roads are like pure gravel... I don't wanna replace it and have it crack a week later. I may just take my chances if I decide it's too bad, or I'll wait till spring till after the street sweepers get most of the rock off the roads.

Mine was replaced with OEM with green band earlier this year as part of the restore project.

Before that I had the original 21 year old pitted to heck and three cracks fixed by SafeLite windshield that it was getting hard to see from all the reflections from pits under bright sunlight.

I also realized that the green tint on the rest of the windshield from the original one was bleached out by the sun from the original owner's lack of care, since this new one is very green, and actually cuts some sunlight in, not just on the green band.

On realoem there are many other kinds of replacement OEM windshield, interesting stuff.

I might think about replacing the side windows now that I realized that the original green tint was also bleached out like the original windshield.

wow all of those are great prices. the place next to my work was going to charge me $125, and i was using the windshield out of my parts car. seems pretty rediculous now after reading this. To make it even better the guy cracked it and said Oh sorry i nicked the glass, do you still want me to put it in? I was thinking are you f'ing kidding me the whole point is so i dont have a cracked windshield.

One of the only benefits realized from halt in new housing construction is the lack of gravel trucks on the 91 here in OC (those dang things were responsible for a crack in my old 540iT, the wife's old C240 and both our E30's!!! If it's gonna happen again, I would rather it happen to a cheaper unit than a nice OEM one.

Ha! I didn't know the tint could get bleached out, but that's what must have happened cause my old OE windshield (350+ K) didn't have the slightest hint of tint at the top. I got the blue header tint, btw.

What an ass. People don't take pride in their work or responsibility for their screw ups. I had a similar thing happen when we got a new garage door installed.

I have a nice windshield from a parts car sitting in my garage. Mine looks like it was shot up with a bb gun, happened before it was mine. But I'm waiting till inspection time to replace it in january...that way they can put my new stickers on it.

Why are people stuck on getting OEM glass? I can see if you are doing a full out restoration on a car. But there are other glass manufacturers out there that is just as good or if not better then the glass that came in these BMWs.
