slumhole? not really if you've got money (and not even all that much of it).

I mean, if you think about it.. we use the dollar, we get just about everything you do in the states (albeit sometimes slower or more expensive) and the cost of living is lower...

not to mention no taxes for retirees or people who make their income in another country :)

PanamaE30, I went to Panama for Sring Break. Went from Panama City up to around David and back in about a week. At no point did I see anywhere even close to the amentities we have here. Not sayiing it's not a gorgeous country, and it was a hell of a time while I was there, but there ain't no place like the US of A.

Good roads, sane drivers, an overall feeling of safety. The was an armed McSecurity guard in McDonald's for gods sake.

Well, no argument about the good roads and sane drivers.. except that you can find those same issues in the states as well. Honestly, road rage here goes about as far as flashing the lights at you and maybe cutting you off.. You don't see people getting shot all the time because of road rage.

As far as safety goes.. that's really all about common sense and OpSec. I've never been mugged, robbed or anything like that. Hell, I drive a convertible and I've never had so much as my car getting scratched while parked; much less my top cut or something like that.

So, while your points may be valid, I think they're far worse in "one of the worlds most technologically advanced nations".

You can bet your ass that Panama;s per capita murder rate is a fraction of ours in the states due to guns, lots of faux illusion of safety we have here. Im not saying Panama is as developed as USA, so dont get huffy. I wouldnt be surprised if it was illegal to own guns in Panama. I know it is in Argentina, anyways.

Nice job of completely disrespecting anothers country, dude. That "slumhole" comment was completely uncalled for. Imagine someone said some shit equally brutish about the U.S. Lets be a little more open-minded here, people. The United States (contrary to most ignorant peoples beliefs) isnt the only country worth a damn. Good day. :)

                  Thank you for your comments.

Actually, owning a gun here is legal.. it is however, illegal to carry it concealed or in a vehicle without a license. Honestly, it's easier to get guns and hell even fully automatic rifles. But that kind of crime is highly localized in places where no turist is gonna be anyways and even then you don't get shit like drive by's. That's unheard of.

Now, assassinations of high ranking political persons does occur every year or so :P

But hey, we're not talking about running for office are we? :P

umm.. having grown up with american children (and military brats at that) I've seen both sides of the coin and honestly...

The reason so many people around the world hate americans is ignorance. I have trouble respecting someone who can't even tell me how many states their own country has.

I've gone to the US on several occasions for seminars and symposiums and while I was exposed to the brightest the country had to offer, everyone else was purdy damned dumb. I had a argument with a college professor like 5 years ago, because he said Panama was not in the continent of North America, but in the continent of Central America.. Yeah, obviously he had not looked at a world map in 40 years, but hey, he didn't have to be arrogant about it. That's what pisses people off.

Honestly, I love the good ol' US of A and everything it stands for. I just feel that ignorance, both within and outside of it, is causing hate and that ain't good.

                              Wait, can you clarify that?

                              According to Wikipedia:

North America occupies the northern portion of the landmass generally referred to as the New World, the Western Hemisphere, the Americas, or simply America. North America's only land connection is to South America at the narrow Isthmus of Panama. According to some authorities, North America begins not at the Isthmus of Panama but at the narrows of Tehuantepec, with the intervening region called Central America. Most, however, prefer to see Central America as a subcontinent or region of North America.
I guess you both could be right, depending on who you ask. ;)

It depends on where and when you were educated. To my parents, and what all South Americans learned back in the day was that Mexico was part of Central America. I was taught that Mexico was part of North America, for example.
